Bitstream Releases Upgrade of its Signature Font Technology Solutions Panorama and Font Fusion

Upgrades Offer Additional Support, Better Functionality and Enhanced Features; to be demonstrated at Embedded Systems Conference

CAMBRIDGE, MA — April 10, 2008 — Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS) a leading software development company with core competencies in browsing, font and publishing technologies, announced today the releases of Panorama™ 4.5 and Font Fusion® 4.5. The Panorama upgrade includes additional support and features for all international language fonts including Arabic, Hebrew, Indic, and Thai scripts, traditionally the most difficult languages to support in products. The Font Fusion upgrade extends the functionality of the company’s premier font subsystem that renders high-quality characters in any format, at any resolution, on any platform or device. Panorama 4.5 and Font Fusion 4.5 will both be demonstrated at Bitstream booth 337 at the Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley 2008, April 14-18, San Jose, CA.,

“We’re always listening to our customers – their increasing demand for consumer solutions in non-English languages helped inspire these upgrades to two of our most popular products, said Anna Chagnon, President and CEO of Bitstream, Inc. Panorama, together with Font Fusion, offers a fast, resource-efficient global font solution for developers building consumer electronics devices, mobile phones, set-top boxes, and small embedded systems. Bitstream offers developers the technology they need to quickly and easily implement international languages, a “must-have” in today’s marketplace.”

Panorama enables developers to draw strings of characters and lay out complex lines of text, by integrating text composition, positioning and rendering. The release of Panorama 4.5 includes several significant new features designed to simplify this process including:

  • Range-based font mapping for fonts based on Unicode ranges
  • Style-based font mapping intelligently picks an existing stylized font or applies the algorithmic style.  When two font variants - regular and italic, for example - are installed, a user selects italic, and that font is picked. But if the italic font is not installed, Panorama enables the regular font to be made to italic algorithmically.
  • Alpha channel support in LCD mode
  • 32-bit Unicode support
  • Support for enhanced text view and editing with:

    - SpaceWrap wraps any spaces that are before a character in a new line

    - Termination style support enables the OEM to have an ellipses kind of termination style using Panorama.  This new feature allows the OEM to terminate the string with some characters if the string is not getting fit inside an area.

  • Support for TabStops on any platform

Font Fusion is designed to support operating systems, software applications, Web applications, low-resolution screen devices, multimedia servers, high-definition television screens (HDTVs), set-top boxes, continuous tone printers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other embedded systems and Internet appliances.  Font Fusion 4.5 offers new features across these applications including:

  • Support for 32-bit Unicode for interpreting large font files as CJK with extended CMAPs for 32- bit Unicode values
  • SmartScale dynamically scales extended characters such as accents and descenders to fit within a device’s preset bounding box
  • Additional support for common windows bitmap font format FNT/FON
  • GlowFilter text glow effect
  • Additional support for CID keyed fonts enables rendering of CID keyed fonts
